GREAT LAYOUTS

Creating great images and creating great layouts are distinct skill sets, and not everybody has both. Here are examples of my versatility in photo layout, as well as the stories behind my visual stories.

Case Study: Photo Pages

Stretched for resources, my local news chain let go of successive waves of its talented reporter staff – but still had pages to fill. The idea surfaced to ask the photo staff to generate photo essays that could be used to fill pages.

The photo team embraced the idea enthusiastically, coming up with enterprising coverage of quirky stories and community characters. But it soon became evident that the layout staff – which likewise had lost members – did not have sufficient resources for the task.

Visually Compelling

Management asked me to take on responsibility for coordinating, editing and laying out the photo pages – in addition to my other responsibilities, of course. I made it my mission to create visually compelling pages that leveraged the strengths of the images to produce a whole that exceeded the sum of the parts.

Here are some of my favorite layouts. If you'd like to see more download the pdf.
